Colloid mill limitations become apparent with very viscous materials, since high viscosity increases the power and torque required to maintain rotor speed, generates excess heat, and can strain the motor and bearings. In such cases, feed rate often needs to be reduced or the gap widened, which can compromise the fineness of particle size reduction that the colloid mill would otherwise achieve on less viscous products.
