Colloid mill CLM-16/25

Colloid mill CLM-16/25 for bitumen emulsion

Designed for inline operation, the CLM-16/25 colloid mill homogenizes and emulsifies liquid products into dense, high-shear-stress slurries. It excels at producing bitumen emulsions, and its versatile design also supports the preparation, dissolution, and processing of a wide variety of products across different industrial sectors.

What It’s Used For

Built to run as part of a continuous production process, the CLM-16/25 handles:

  • Large-scale bitumen emulsion manufacturing
  • A wide range of liquid processing tasks – preparation, dissolution, and mixing – across multiple industries

Because it operates inline, the mill fits directly into existing process lines without interrupting continuous output.

How It Works

At its core, the CLM-16/25 uses a rotor and stator, each built from concentric rings of cutting tools (knives and cutters) with engineered groove and hole patterns designed to apply mechanical force to the product with precision.

During operation, rotor and stator rings sit coaxially and spin relative to one another without physical contact, reaching speeds of up to 45 m/s. This gap-based, contact-free arrangement is maintained through carefully calibrated axial and radial clearances, protecting the tooling from wear.

Product flow through the mill:

  1. The product enters through the stator’s axial bore at the inlet
  2. It travels through the rotor/stator zone, where mechanical and hydrodynamic forces act on it
  3. The finished product exits through the radial outlet

Inside the rotor/stator zone, rapid changes in shear stress, shear force, and flow speed reshape the product at a microscopic level. The expanded contact area between reactive components speeds up chemical reactions, while the mechanical action drives thorough dispersion, emulsification, homogenization, grinding, and pulverization – all within a single pass through the mill.

Applications

The bitumen emulsions produced by the CLM-16/25 support a range of industry uses:

Road Construction

  • Surfacing emulsions
  • Pothole patching
  • Bonding of asphalt layers
  • Slurry Seal and Multimac technologies
  • Ground and base stabilization
  • Asphalt recycling emulsions
  • Long-term storage emulsions (wintertime pothole patching mixtures)
  • Tackiness remover emulsions

Hydraulic Engineering

  • Waterproof membranes for foundations, swimming pools, pipe and pile linings
  • Applied by jet method – single- or double-component, for accelerated film formation

Roofing

  • Waterproof membranes for roofs of varying complexity
  • Applied by jet method for fast, even coverage

Why It Delivers Results

  • Built for continuous throughput – keeps pace with high-volume production without downtime between batches
  • Speeds of up to 45 m/s – generates the shear force needed for thorough dispersion and homogenization
  • Wear-resistant, contact-free design – rotor and stator never touch, extending service life
  • Multi-industry flexibility – goes beyond bitumen to handle a broad range of liquid processing needs

* – Depending on the product (liquid)

  • The mill can be used in various industries.
  • Compact sizes.
  • The mill can be equipped with rotor/stator tooling of various designs and with different numbers of processing stages (rings), depending on the type of material being processed and the required processing effect (nozzle, chamber, and conical for grinding applications or viscous products).
  • The tooling can be either collapsible or manufactured from a solid workpiece using various grades of steel, depending on the mill application; the optimal tool geometry for a specific task, as well as the tool material, can be selected accordingly.
  • The mill can be operated both indoors and in sheltered outdoor environments.
