In pigment production, a simple agitator can suspend particles but cannot generate enough localized shear to break up fine agglomerates, whereas a colloid mill forces the slurry through a narrow, adjustable rotor-stator gap that mechanically reduces particle size and improves dispersion uniformity. This results in better color consistency, higher tinting strength and reduced settling, which is why colloid mills are commonly used as a finishing step after initial mixing.
