The colloid mill working principle relies on a high-speed rotor turning at several thousand RPM inside a closely fitting conical or disc-shaped stator. The narrow clearance between rotor and stator forces the material through under extreme shear stress, breaking down dispersed phase droplets or solid particles and coating them with the continuous phase, which reduces particle size and stabilizes the resulting emulsion or suspension.
